A Brief History of Ballinacurra Weston

Built in the !950's as a solution to inadequate housing and city slums, Ballinacurra Weston is situated on the southside of the City. Less than half the estate is currentely targeted for regeneration (pictured above).

In the part of Ballinacurra Weston that is targeted for regeneration 27% are renting from Limerick City Council and the remainder have bought or are in the process of buying their own homes.

The Employment Rate for the area is 35.7%
The Unemployment Rate the area is 9.1%

Ballinacurra Weston has been labeled by the media as a 'gangland' estate, although the vast majority of residents are law abiding and decent.

Written 43 years ago by Fr. Liam Ryan, Social Dynamite: A Study of Early School-Leavers, argues for the urgent need for the social regeneration of a newly built Council estate "situated in the suburbs of one of our larger cities", which he calls Parkland to avoid adding to the "amused hostility" of "the better educated classes" towards the estate. The city in question is Limerick and the estate is Ballinacurra Weston.
